  • DevolutioN was invited to participate in the first Creation of Creators (COC) at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center from September 11th to 14th.
    9月11日至14日,"DevolutioN 退化建筑"受邀参加位于上海世博展览馆的首届Creation of Creators (简称COC)。
  • When we received the invitation by the end of July, we felt that we might not be suitable for the COC exhibition considering the working attributes of DevolutioN. Frank Chou, one of the founders of COC, phoned us later and expounded his intention as a designer on initiating this exhibition, which is to discuss how design can be truly infused with the target industry, and more specifically, with the “home” manufacturing industry. The concept of COC, as well as its focus on the transformation of the design industry, are also our interests.
    7月底接到邀请时,考虑到"DevolutioN 退化建筑"的工作属性,我们觉得不适合参加这个展会。COC的发起人之一周宸宸后来跟我们做了电话沟通,阐述了同为设计师的他发起这个展览的初衷——在制造业升级的大背景下,借助COC这样一个关注设计行业参与者的平台,探讨设计如何真正注入服务对象行业的核心基因之中,同时依靠设计商业与设计管理去衔接平面、摄影、造型、跨媒介传播等多个领域。这其中涉及到的设计行业服务对象及自身转型的问题恰好是"退化建筑 DevolutioN"所长期关注的
  • At about the same time, I (Wang Qi) rented a house in Shanghai. The increase in housing prices in recent years has also affected rental rates. From 2009 to 2010, I lived in a 70m2 space on top of a public house near Jing An Hotel in the French Concession. The apartment had two bedrooms and one living room with a large terrace (about 10m2) connecting the two bedrooms. The rent at that time was 3000 Yuan, and now it would be around 10000 Yuan to rent a place with a similar layout. Despite the high rent and living costs, young people still choose big cities due to their abundance in educational, cultural and commercial resources. Behind the supply system of the rental market is the trend of urbanization in China.
    差不多同一时间,我(王琦)在上海租房子。这几年房价的增长也影响了租房价格。2008年到2010年,我在上海生活时住在静安宾馆边上(法租界)一个约70平米的公房顶层,两室一厅,带一个连通两个卧室的十几平米的大露台,那时候的租金是3000元,而如今条件相当的房源租金在10000元左右。即便是这么高昂的租金和生活成本,还是有很多年轻人选择大城市,因为这里集中了最多的教育、文化和商业资源,无疑有更多机会和可能性。租房市场的供给关系背后是中国城市化一直以来的趋势。

  • When I searched on rental websites for two-bedroom and one living room apartments under 7,000 yuan (In Xiamen, with this budget you can rent a relatively well-renovated apartment with three bedrooms one living room in a building with an elevator in Siming District), most of the results were old-fashioned public houses with aged equipment and old decoration. If you have a bit of aesthetic requirements, the concerns after moving in would not only be the failures of aged electronic equipment but also on if you want to replace the ugly furniture and re-decorate the place. As a space for everyday life, you always want it to be more comfortable or stylish. But at the same time, the voice “after all, it is a rented house” was also at the back of my mind. Besides the change in work and fluctuation in income, I also have to worry if the landlord is going to sell the house someday and I will have to move. I believe many young people who lives in rented houses in big cities share the same concern.
    当我通过租房网站搜索7000元以下两室一厅的房源(这个预算在厦门可以租到思明区三室一厅中上装修的电梯住宅),跳出来的大多都是房龄较久,设备和装修老旧的老式公房。搬进去后除了经常要面对电器老化故障问题,如果你是一个有点审美需求的人,还会为“要不要把这些难看的家具换掉,稍微装修得舒服一点”而烦恼,因为作为一个日常生活的空间,你总是希望它更舒适,或体现一些个人审美。但“毕竟是租来的房子”是脑中的另一个声音,除了工作变动、收入水平变化等风险外,你还怀着哪天房东把房子卖掉又不得不搬家的顾虑。我相信很多租住在大城市的年轻人也有跟我有着同样的困扰。
  • In the popular house renovation shows of recent years, we often see that poorly conditioned houses became a new home with more reasonable functions and decorations. At the end of 2016, DevolutioN also participated in an online show called “WOW New Home”. Such a kind of shows provides new ideas and references for old house renovations, but its high cost is obviously not applicable to renters.
    在这几年很流行的家居改造节目里,我们经常看到条件很差的房子摇身一变成为崭新的无论是功能还是装潢上都更合理的住宅,2016年年底"DevolutioN 退化建筑"也参与过一个网络家居改造节目《WOW新家》。这类型节目为旧屋改造提供了很多思路和参考,但高昂的改造成本显然不适用于租房者。
  • Having this realistic doubt in mind, we had several meetings and hoped to reach a “cozy and economical” renovation plan for the rental house. We thought about reconstruct the existing furniture, or a cubic meter of modular furniture (easier to dissemble and transport since moving is also a pain in the neck). But in the end, I thought I should just go to IKEA. Furniture there has a sense of design and comes at a reasonable price. Plus, almost all the furniture can be dissembled into flat pieces, which reduces the workload of handling and transporting. However, when I thought about it, renters always think of IKEA, a brand that is “designed for everyone” when they want a bit of personality to their home. Is IKEA offering too many choices or are we lacking perspectives?
    抱持着这个现实疑虑我们开了几次会,希望讨论出一个“舒适且经济”的租房改造方案,我们想过直接改造出租房现有家具,也想过可自由拆装组合的一立方米组装家具(便于运输和装卸,搬家也是一件值得头疼的事)。但想了一圈,觉得还不如去逛趟宜家,既有设计感,售价又非常合理,而且几乎所有家具都可平板运输,减少了搬运和组装的工作量。可是转念一想,当租房的人希望在有限预算里想追求一点个性的时候,想到的竟然是“为每个人设计”的宜家。是宜家提供了太多选择还是我们在某些层面太缺乏选择?

  • With this question in mind, we put the IKEA model house in the 4×4 booth given by COC. Expectedly, this 16m2 was ignored or doubted in the huge flow of people. Most people were interested in more advanced, technical and better-looking home goods- products of the rapid refinement of home design promoted by real estate industry, but not the 16m2 type - a kind that can be seen everywhere like in cafes, residences, offices, and even on Taobao; a reflection of renters’ difficulties under the pressure of real estate business.
    我们正是持着这个疑问在COC给予的一个4×4展位里放入了这个宜家样板房。这16㎡在家具展巨大的人流中不出所料被忽视或疑惑。大多数人是来看更新、更有技术含量、更好看的家居产品的—这些产品背后是这二十年来中国家居设计在房地产行业推动下快速的精致化发展—而不是"16㎡"内的这种在咖啡馆、住宅、办公场所,甚至淘宝中早已随处可见的标签风格,以及它镜像出的房地产商业下租房群体的选择障碍。
