  • ⇦ two windows ⇨ resides along the street on Jiashan Road, Shanghai, is surrounded by traditional alleyways and small stores (grocery shops, curtain shops, housing agencies, pharmacies, etc.) as well as new businesses such as cafes, Japanese restaurants, and bars. From July to November, it served as DevolutioN’s temporary office and also an open exhibition space. We gave the space of the two windows to different creators. They have completed 7 exhibitions of various forms including visual arts, sound, concept art, installations, multimedia interactive arts and so on. These exhibitions, which usually last 3-7 days, attract neighbors or passengers sometimes, but mostly they just blend in with their surroundings. In one of the multimedia interactive exhibitions, a neighbor repeatedly knocked on our windows and asked: “isn’t it supposed to be interactive”?
    ⇦ two windows ⇨ 是一个位于上海市嘉善路140弄1号的沿街空间,它周围既有上海里弄生活及其衍生的小商业(杂货店、窗帘店、房屋中介、调剂商店等),又有咖啡馆、日料店、酒吧等新业态。从今年7月初到刚过去的11月,它作为 “DevolutioN 退化建筑”上海临时办公空间的同时,也是一个开放的展览项目。我们把沿街的两扇窗户交给不同创作者,他们在这两个“橱窗”中完成了7个展览,包含视觉艺术、声音、观念、装置、多媒体互动等等媒介。这些展览平均持续3-7天时间,有时会吸引一些街坊邻居或路人围观,但大部分时候与邻里的日常生活若即若离。在其中一个多媒体互动展览中,有位邻居曾特地跑过来反复敲我们的窗户,并提出“不是互动的吗”的疑问。

  • The area this office located in has undergone street renovation in 2017 and the form of business was also strictly and rapidly regulated. This kind of mandatory reconstruction adopts the following methods: blocking business windows, command closing on shops, and renovate exterior walls uniformly. It is an urbanization method without room for negotiation. In the first ⇦ two windows ⇨ plan, the two windows were blocked off with cement boards as an imitation of this coarse transformation.

  • IKEA, the furniture store with the concept of “designed for everyone” is distributed in cities with the most social resources in China. While people in these cities are more accessible to education, commerce, and job opportunities, they also bear a higher living cost. Many young Chinese, which some live in rented apartments, imagine their dream life in the IKEA store. Some of them live in rented apartments.
    “宜家 IKEA”,这个“为每个人而设计”的家具品牌卖场分布在集中了最多社会资源的中国城市。在这些城市里,人们享受着比其他城市更丰富的商业、教育、就业资源的同时,也承担着更高昂的居住成本。每天都有许多中国年轻人在“宜家 IKEA”卖场里建构自己的美好生活想象。他们中的一部分人每月负担房租,居住在出租住宅中。
  • Their living stability fluctuates with their change in work, income as well as the landlord’s willingness to rent due to housing prices. Young people who have more choices in clothes, food, and travel modes feel the desire to transform the “last generation aesthetics” that is common in rental housing according to their individualities. These variables require such transformation to be economical and convenient. IKEA provides them an ideal situation - a balance between design and economy, stability and temporality.
    工作变动、收入增减、受房价浮动所影响的房东住宅出售意愿,都在使他们的居住介于稳定和临时。在穿着、饮食、出行方式上已有更多选择的年轻人也有着改造出租住宅普遍存在的“父辈审美”并融入自己个性的需要,这些变数要求这种改造经济便捷。“宜家 IKEA”恰好为他们提供了最佳选择——一种设计和经济、稳定感与临时性的平衡。
  • Products designed by different designers with various versions and styles provides them with abundant choices in the IKEA store. In this way, the IKEA that is “designed for everyone” turns into a gate for many people’s personalized living. The IKEA thus generates an “IKEA aesthetics” that can be easily identified.

  • From September 11th to 14th, DevolutioN was invited to participate in the first Creation of Creators (COC) at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. We placed an IKEA model house in the 16m2 booth. All the furniture in the booth was purchased in IKEA Shanghai and was not intended for rental or sale. We experienced the success of “democratic design” from its friendly system of purchase, shipping, and installing. All furniture will be delivered after the show to our colleague who just rented a place in Shanghai. Before this, he had been worrying about the problem “otherwise what choices?” while living in a 16m2 space in the living room of a rented apartment where he “wanted to live comfortably but also didn’t know when would he move again”.
    9月11日-14日,DevolutioN 退化建筑受邀参加位于上海世博展览馆的首届Creation of Creators(COC)我们在16㎡的展位中放入了一个“宜家 IKEA”样板房。这个样板房中的家具全部选购于上海宜家,不用于任何租赁和出售。我们在选购时体验着便捷的购买、配送和安装系统。体验着“民主设计”的成功。展览结束后,这些家具将被尽快送到我们一位刚在上海租房的同事家中使用。因为在这之前,他一直在另一个16㎡的“想住舒服一点又不知道什么时候就会搬走”的出租住宅客厅里烦恼着“不然还有什么选择?”这个问题。

  • N.APE, from the cross-media design studio, transformed the two windows into an interactive space in a week: the passerby can control the lighting motions by connecting to the speaker through mobile Bluetooth. The build-in program generates different colors, patterns, and frequencies according to the music played by the participant. In the blink of an eye, the participant can enjoy his/her temporary club on the street side. This project continues the theme of N.APE’s recent project “AIRDROP”, introducing new living scenes in the digital era.

  • In 33EMYBW’s new album “GOLEM”, When the golems are injected with souls, they resonate and synchronize to sounds, people do the same to sounds on online spaces. This work generates a digital farm with patterns and prints. It creates a digital situation of slavery that explores the power dynamics of digital space and modern slavery. Knitting and prints here are used to simulate the possibilities of prospective biological surfaces.

    Bysanz, an independent designer and stylist, currently lives and works in Shanghai and London and is studying BA degree in Fashion at Central Saint Martins. He mainly used clothing as a medium to explore the non-mainstream culture. Projects of this theme include “Civilized Pussy”, a personal project started in 2017, and “Zexi” which has been exhibited at Slime Engine in 2018. In recent years, he had also designed costumes, including some costumes for 33EMYBW and artist Ye Funa’s solo exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary. He was also a stylist at London Fashion Week for many times.

    33EMYBW (33, Wu Shan), based in Shanghai. In recent years, she has been active as a producer in the electronic music scene in Shanghai. She draws inspiration from modern dance music, folk music, and visual arts and turns them into stunning low pitch rhythms and experimental sounds with strong personalities. In 2015, 33 released her single “EMSYGYDL” at SVBKVLT and officially started her project. In 2017, she released her first solo album “medusa” with D Force in Beijing. The tune “Medusa” was also awarded the Best Electronic Single by Abilu Music Awards. In the same year, she also participated in video shooting with the British magazine i-D as a representative figure of Shanghai electronic music. Besides, she is not only a core member of Duck Fight Goose, a well-known experimental electronic music band in China, but has also been engaged in many other independent bands including 33 Dao, BooJii, and Muscle Snog. In 2018, she released her new album “Golem” with SVBKVLT.

  • In Greek mythology, Cupid, who was ridiculed by the god of sun Apollo, used his power to fail the connection of Apollo and Daphne. Daphne, who escaped from love, asked his father, the river god, to turn himself into a laurel tree. To commemorate Daphne, Apollo made the laurel tree as his sacred tree and vowed to honor her forever.

  • Lin Sansi (the “Artificial Intelligence Artist”, whose function is to predict artistic creation behavior) generates the command “Go to the Crystal Island” and invites you to leave together. The texts Lin Sansi randomly spits out constitutes a transporter called “Excessive Flying Teleporter”, which you will be transported to a specific reality that may be a customized island of information composed of bubbles. To increase friction, you must change. The multi-directional combination of surrounding bubble barriers randomly rotates, starts and restarts. Bubble bursts.   • In this work, Chen Yishen and Gao Kang attempted to break the shackles of time and reassemble the ambiguous relationship between the medical clinic and the beauty salon. They enjoyed addressing “trivial” matters in an “exaggerated” manner to reflect the excessive presentation in content and form in many current circumstances.

  • The tricolor barbershop light was found on a clear night in Shanghai’s old town. We believe, to a certain extent, this scene represents the state of Shanghai in which the old and new cultures are intertwined. Such a kind of light appears very often in this city, but why do the barbershops use the tricolor light? It doesn’t seem to trigger much curiosity but just passed on as a custom.

  • The tricolor turning light was originally created for the surgical clinic’s advertisement. The three colors, red, blue and white represent arteries, veins, and gauze respectively. The surgeons in these clinics were hairdressers who followed the monks. It is indeed an absurd historical fact in the history of the United Kingdom that the barbers were surgery operators. These people were given the name “Barber-surgeon”.
    实际上,三色转灯在最初是为外科诊所招揽生意而诞生的。红蓝白分别代表着动脉、静脉、和纱布的颜色。而这些诊所的主刀医生,则是听从修道士指挥的理发师。由理发师来操刀外科手术,在英国历史上确是一项荒诞不羁的史实,这些人被赐名“理发医师”(barber-surgeon)。

    From Quanzhou, Fujian Province, he graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University with an undergraduate degree in English and obtained a master's degree in Book Arts from the University of the Arts London. Chen’s works cover a variety of mediums including artist books, performances, sounds, and installations and have been exhibited in London, Oxford, Shanghai and many other places. All of the above were nonsense, in my opinion, she is probably the most beautiful artist within an area with a radius of 500 m and a recycling station for useless ideas within an area with a radius of 10 km.
