When DEVOLUTION was first founded, we started a project named “Two Rooms One Hall” which aimed to discuss how space designs by real estate companies shape and affect people’s living habits. The hashtag “TheSpaceWho” is an extension of this project. We will be occasionally sharing residential cases with clear personal expressions under this hashtag.
We brought our photographers there when the residential project was completed. As soon as a small piece of stain on the curtain was captured by the lens, a man with cleaning tools appeared and began to scrub vigorously. He was neither a camera assistant nor a nanny, but the house owner himself, BBC.
BBC’s place sits right beside a cruise terminal. A typical seascape of a lively harbor city rests right outside the window: ships coming and going outside the window, and buildings shining on the other shore - A typical seascape of a lively harbor city. Opens up the soft quilt, presses down the control button for curtains, tells Siri to play music, and picks up coffee made by the auto coffee machine, BBC stands by the window for the morning view after this series of actions and starts his day. Organized, tidy and clean, the space has neither wire tangled at corners nor plastic bags from supermarkets hanging around. Many people long to live in such a space. In addition to the storage and smart home system provided by the design, the maintenance of this space also relies on a master who is a “VIP-and-Nanny-In-One”.BBC的住宅在一个邮轮码头边,窗外时有船只往来,对岸建筑闪烁着光,是那种港口城市特有的运动的海景。
The “non-inductive” life that BBC, a huge fan for technology, yearns requires a highly interfaced space, which needs –作为一个重度科技控,BBC向往的“无感生活”是一种非常界面化的空间,它需要——
1.The modern sense of material surface
We used piano lacquering panels and white artificial stone (seamless) as the main material to create a smooth modern look.1.
2.Storage and organizing
our response to this was:
a) Space arrangement: The original layout of the four-room, one hall was re-organized. We kept two bedrooms according to the owner’s living needs and merged the rest of the spaces into an open, L-shaped living room with the best view.
b) Storage arrangement: we left about 78m² of cabinet storage space for household items, personal collections, and sundries;
c) Function buttons arrangement: All functions buttons such as lighting, curtains control, air conditioning, and ventilation were integrated into one touch screen. The switch panel protruding from the wall is removed.2.
a. 空间归纳:对这个四房一厅的住宅原本的格局做了重新整理,依据主人生活需求保留了两个卧室,将其他空间合并为一个开敞且拥有最佳落地景观空间的L型通廊式客厅;
b. 储藏归纳:留出将近78m²的柜式储藏空间供生活用品、个人收藏品和杂物分类收纳;

3.Initial State (this initial state OCD is like when a computer restarts you subconsciously empty the recycle bin to return its icon into a blank bin)
We were unable to respond to this as it relies entirely upon the owner himself. Freelance gives him more time to spend on his home thus his pursuit of the initial state would be easier to obtain – more time to remove stains on curtains, stainless steel and glass, and more time to learn ways to optimize these actions.3.
Q: Would you like to briefly introduce yourself first?
A: Unemployed, like all kinds of 3C products.
Q: A fan of technology?
A: A huge fan of technology.
Q: What are your ideal house and living like?
A: Modern, with complete Intelligent Control System, low key but has all kinds of high-tech in one body.
Q: What were the initial requirements for this house?
A: The request I remembered is that there must be a bathtub! And I want a real fireplace!(Q: 退化建筑 A: 房主BBC)
Q: What advice did the designer give?
A: Determined not to give me a fireplace, and gave me a bathtub reluctantly. (Laughs) Since the bathtub is there, and water brings fortune, the fireplace would be optional.
Q: Is your house now the way you imagined it?
A: The finished product is perfectly in line with my requirements. Not so much different. I could already imagine 70-80% when the designer proposed the plan. I have rarely gone out since moved in. And since it’s freelance anyway, everything I’m doing so far can be done by online communication. The network at home is so perfect, I don’t want to go to other places to suffer. I have now set my home as my base and connected in all my other terminals through the network so I can remotely control them. I named this all-white house after that second ship of Pegasus Class in Gundam U.C 0079, White Base.
Q: Could you talk about the Intelligent Control System of your place?
A: Basically, anything you can think of is connected. There are only touch panels in this house, and all the devices and functions, including lights, curtains, air conditioners, heaters, ventilation, and elevator calling, can be controlled from any panel. When you press the “leave home” button, all the lights and air conditioners will be automatically turned off, and the elevator will be called to your floor to avoid waiting. The washer, dryer, and dishwasher are all controllable through your phone. Upon completion, a notice would be sent to your phone. (this design is super sweet to me since I always forget about the clothes in the washer)Q:
bing
Q: Which place at home is your favorite to stay?
A: The living room. When I first designed it, I wanted to spend most of my time in the living room. After all, the living room has a whole set of facilities for games, movies, afternoon tea, and drinks. Moreover, the view outside the window is so wonderful, I can never get tired of it.
Q: Is the space always this clean like in the photos?
A: Yes, basically every day!
Q: Why did you make lots of spaces for storage?
A: Too many sundries and collections of gadgets that require a lot of storage space. All these objects can hide behind closed doors. When the guests come, I can just open a door and throw everything in it! No lemons, just lemonade!Q:
A: 客厅。
Q: I suppose many miscellaneous objects and traces of daily life conflict with the sense of order?
A: I don’t have many miscellaneous objects from my daily life. And I remember seeing a story about a Japanese family somewhere, saying that their entire house is always empty, erasing all traces of living. Ha, it seems quite fitting for me.
Q: Do you clean the house yourself?
A: Yes.
Q: Why don’t you get a nanny?
A: I have not yet completed the SOP handbook I plan to give to the nanny. (lay hands)Q:
A: 是的

Q: Do you think there is any difference between your and your parents' views on living?
A: The difference is that they don’t know what they want! They can’t describe their needs. But I can see the finished looks in my head when I am designing. They can't imagine due to the lack of a sense of space. My mom liked it after it’s finished though. I think this is also the home she wants. She just thinks that it’s a bit too modern, they need something less radical.
Q: Do the people you know think about the relationship between their house and their hobbies and habits?
A: It feels like they don’t care as much as I do.
Q: How do you spend your day at home?
A: Wake up naturally, the pure white sheets make me feel like I woke up in a hotel (the whole set of bedding including the bed itself are hotel products though). I just want this hotel feeling! Curtains open automatically, and I tell Siri to play music. Then I take a shower, make a cup of coffee using the coffee machine and stand in front of the window in a daze. Then!! Here comes the key part!! I was a hotel guest in the last second and the next, I am the cleaning lady! Make the bed like no one ever slept on it! Fold the duvet and steam to flatten the pleats, and then I go on to restore the bathroom. All the stainless steel and glass should be wiped to remove water stains. To do this, I specifically asked friends working in the hotel industry and searched hotel room cleaning video tutorials online. Haha! Now I can tidy up the entire suite in 20 minutes. (I’m really torturing myself to enjoy life, haha!)Q:
