• DEVACATION

  • Some time ago, I was dragged by a rough-looking friend to a Loli cake store opened by his friend, which is said to be very popular. There must be a long queue on weekends, and the mealtime is limited, not more than one hour. With his friend's hospitality, we went straight to a reserved seat. In the middle of a circle of Lolitas busy taking photos with desserts, our two uncles each finished a cake with a cute little flag. At this time, I proposed to take a photo. My friend further suggested to take a photo of American tourists, which is the kind of southern American tourists who go to Europe and need to find scenic spots to take photos. They would juxtapose himself with various cultural attractions, wearing sunglasses, having a red face and a beer belly, holding a beer in one hand, and making V signs in the other, that is a typological photography.
  • Another time I was in Shanghai, meeting up with a friend I hadn't seen in years. He sent me the location of a store and invited me to have Brunch together the next morning. The next day I arrived as scheduled and found that this is an ordinary small bakery. After each of us ordered a small cup of coffee and a piece of bread, I asked him, "Isn't it Brunch?" "Sure, this is my Brunch." My friend is very demanding about food. He has been working in the gourmet industry for years and is usually a little arrogant. However, I can tell that when he says, " this is my Brunch", he is not cynical about Brunch's status quo at all. This is true. It is his daily life.
  • On the contrary, I suddenly would like to ask myself, "When did the recognition that ordering an egg benedict, a weight loss salad, and a glass of avocado juice in Green&Safe be called Brunch"?
  • On the one hand, I find that I can take pictures of out-of-place "American tourists" in more places and on the other hand, I seem to have assimilated a lot of the new urban lifestyles. Even in the same city, I might switch between the roles of "American tourists" and "European attractions", taking the city as both a daily life and the city as a landscape. But how does the transition occur between daily life and the landscape?
  • I think one situation is the result of urbanization. Like the gentrification of neighborhoods has caused the demise of daily life in the original neighborhoods. It may mean the arrival of fresh residents and newer and larger commercial formats. It also means the local residents and their ways of living, transportation, as well as the long-term accumulation of complex community relations, neighborhood commerce, the exit of these broader cultures. However, in order to emphasize the cultural attributes of the blocks after gentrification, many places will "reserve" or build a "local landscape" (the shell). For example, the reconstruction of the Shapowei fishing village in Xia Men asked Danmin (fishermen living on boats) who had originally lived here to move out and put in new fishing boats that existed like scenery, creating a kind of fishing village landscape. However, the shops along the coast have changed from hardware stores, grain and oil stores consumed by surrounding local residents to milk tea stores, souvenir shops, internet-famous café, and stalls patronized by tourists. The real daily life is compressed into an abstract landscape, and sightseeing has replaced it as daily life here.
  • On the other hand, commercial formats, block looks, and living styles are always being quietly transformed by the culture and consumption of the younger generation. The newer forms of online media have brought businesses a more sensitive sense of smell and accelerated this transformation. I still remember the first time I saw the “Dissidia Final Fantasy” virtual character Lightning appeared in a Louis Vuitton commercial in 2016, I was still wondering what was going on. Unexpectedly, the virtual world and gamification are becoming or have actually been a real way of life. This kind of metabolism of the city itself, promoted by a younger culture, is also destined to be the landscape of some citizens in their daily lives.
  • Many years ago, one of my artist friend Tang Nannan asked many friends "What is nostalgia?" when he was doing an art project about "homesickness". My answer was "A trip to hometown". Traveling to our hometown may mean that Tony, Mary and Candy, who are shaped by more central cities, gradually become strangers in their hometown. It may also be that we, who are no longer the young generation, have estranged from the city that is constantly metabolizing.
  • The separation between daily life and landscape today is more than the difference between central cities and third-tier and fourth-tier cities, or the cultural generation gap between people in different eras. Citizens of the same generation in the same city may also be separated by disparate jobs, life concepts, and cultural sources. When you are struggling to go through the hip-hop youth in 44KW club outfields and dive into the techno dance floor as a kind of musical belief, "clubbing" would still be misunderstood as the collective exercises that shook their head on the disco floor as decade ago, in the minds of your peers who work in state-owned enterprises or is homebody. The opportunity for us and BIEDE to jointly launch this "DEVACATION" is precisely this separation between daily life and the landscape. The first stop of Shanghai’s itinerary is nothing new to many people, but for others, it might be another interface of city life. Of course, you may also register for parents who is curious about what you are doing every day, or friends of the same age who are still deeply confused about the lives of contemporary young people.
