If there are a large amount of entrances in a city, the year 2020 would undoubtedly be a very unique one. In this year, we had to divested ourselves from not only the pleasant life around residential communities, convenience stores and shopping malls, but also the more concentrated resources, convenience and sense of security brought about by high-density population. It also made the mobility that we are accustomed to stop abruptly. The boundaries between cities(Even the boundaries between districts, between streets and between neighborhoods)appeared suddenly. We no longer check the part of the destination route only, but also began to care about whether the route is available or not, where the boundaries are, or how to avoid those high-risk area effectively. That means we began to check the map macroscopically.
Stars, as a project, is about one of the interfaces on the map—— the stars, symbols of government agencies, distributed in the city network and intertwined into a function allocation network. During COOVID-19, they turned into looming.
We accomplished this very tiny project with AnyOne workshop. We met Yang Ping and Yu Mo of AnyOne in the Inter-World-View project initiated by the Institute of Contemporary Art & Social Thoughts (ICAST) in 2019. In this large-text discussion activity, they were acting as a pair of listening ears most of the time. But when they and their partner Passepartout Duo, another music artist couple from the United States and Italy, sat in the corner, picked up a variety of strange instruments and began to play their music, I was immediately moved by this kind of silent and beyond language. We left each other’s contact details after this event, thinking about doing something along someday.
Through sending Wechat voice message occasionally, we exchanged ideas intermittently in 2020. Except the work calls, we still inquired after the situation of COOVID-19 in the city in which we lived. Beijing, AnyOne’s work place, and Daqing, Heilongjiang (Yanping’s hometown) were in lockdown by turns. Passepartout Duo—— the couple who had been doing sound design were completely trapped in Shanghai, had to stop all the floating scheme.
The news about COOVID-19 from different cities were heard during this whole period. Cities and cities had to close the border. Otherwise COOVID-19 had gradually become a standard for measuring the health conditions, systems, culture, and traditions of cities. Also during this period, our curiosity was aroused by stargazing. Through the organization and distribution of these stars, can we see how administrative functions, systems and politics permeate the city?Or how are the units in different cities organized? And is it effective or not?
We selected ten cities, they are more representative types of cities, and on the other hand, they are also with different response strategies and effects to COOVID-19. We intercepted the highest resident population density from these ten cities, randomly sampled them with a 12km*12km square and captured the arrangement and organization of stars at a scale of 200:1. AnyOne continued to use “One Meter Per Minute”, the previous work of AnyOne and Passepartout Duo’s. Through the punched holes, the map turned into ten long sound tracks, and a small paper music box reads them and made sounds.
In the end, these “stars”, these moles on the skin of these cities, finally got rid of their images related to the office building, efficiency, jurisdiction and frivolous civil servants in reality and in the three-dimensional world, became a series of fleeting inorganic sound, revealed subtle and wonderful differences.
