  • We get a sculpture out from a mould, which is a model of a narrow space between a cluster of the villagers’ self-built houses. In order to present this project, we visited Tiantou community near Xiang’an Tunnel in Xiamen and measured many of the small open areas between the villagers’ overcrowded houses. From these largely neglected spaces, we see, however, vitality. They are the fractions of sky that you can see when you raise your head from this overwhelming village-in-city.
    They are the only pathway in this highly dense housing community that raindrops and sunlight can get through. They are the dumb and unhealthy cracks of the city within which a dark alley is hidden or a window can only leave ajar. They are the deserted town where low-rent buildings squeeze against each other. We colored each of the space we measured to help us better visualize this particular (semi-)urban landscape that formed in the process of marketization and urbanization.
    我们倒出了一组城中村负模，它们的原型来自厦门的一个名叫田头社的城中村，村民自建建筑与建筑之间的缝隙。它们是你走在这个城中村中仰头看到的天空切片，也是光和雨水落入这个超高密度建筑社区的路径。这些缝隙中，很可能隐藏着一个街道死角或许多只能打开30度角的窗户。它们是低廉出租住宅的相互挤压，我们对这些灰色空间进行着色，以便更好地看见城市化过程中地权经济催生的这种特殊的尺度景观。
