  • In the previous three decades, the excessively rapid growth of major Chinese cities give rise to a series of issues including transportation, population structure, urban lifestyle, urban and nature, as well as wealth gap which provide the exhibition planner the inspiration of using “Devolution City” as the theme of this exhibition. “Devolution City”, referring to reflections and imaginations on problems arising in various cities (or parts of cities), is the foundation which the invited artists used to reconstruct a miniature-sized simulation city. Hence, just as it is depicted by Marco Polo that these devolution cities are co-fabricated in a mixture of virtue and reality, factual interpretation and misunderstanding, which will, eventually, evolve into diverse forms of sound theatres that emit sound fluidly. These imagination-based theatres, owning functions such as reconstructing wonders and secrets, are absurd yet dedicated endeavors of us to demonstrate uniqueness of all cities in this era.
    这个问句和近三十年大面积的、快速城市化中成长起来的中国城市,共同激发了一系列提出关于交通、人口结构、城市与生存、城市与自然、贫富差距的问题。“退化城市 DevolutioN CITY”的构思正产生于此,它是我们(退化建筑DevolutioN)对不同城市(或城市中的局部问题)提出的反省和想象,然后我们将不同城市议题交给我们邀请的艺术家,请他们以这些现实的、具体的问题作为素材,用抽象的声音重新建构一个城市。这些“退化城市 DevolutioN CITY”因此同马可·波罗的叙述一样,是口口相传的真实与虚构交织的城市文本,是一系列对城市的解读与误读。它们最终将发展成形式各异的声音剧场,并在这些城市中流动发声。用这些以讹传讹的剧场重新塑造奇观和秘密,是我们为现今时代中城市独特性做的荒诞努力。

  • Shanghai was chosen as the first exhibition stop for its significance and representativeness. The concept of “Better City, Better Life” proposed in 2010 Shanghai Exposition manifests major cities’ ambitions to accomplish reforms on technology, modernization and city scale. Expansion of city scales, development of internet technology and soaring business costs have co-founded the possibilities of new living forms such as shared economy and shared life.
    作为中国城市化无法绕开的一个城市,上海将作为“退化城市”的首站。“城市,让生活更美好(Better City, Better Life)”正是2010年上海世博会提出的议题,它透露了中国城市化对技术化、现代化、规模化城市的野心。随后的几年中,随着城市规模扩张、互联网技术发展、商业成本提升,这样的城市展现出共享经济及未来共享生活的可能性。
  • The artists invents four possible aspects of life that could potentially be shared in the future in Shanghai Devolution City Exhibition. Despite being boasted of having future value, the four mendacious construction projects actually vividly reflect realistic problems existing in major cities, including business ethics and traditions, cities and the nature, consumptionisim, technological development and employment, information redundancy and so on. By joint promotion of the McaM Ming Contemporary Art Museum and Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Swiss Arts Council, Mr. Feldermelder will be the opening co-op artist collaborating with N.APE, a multi-media art group, on the sound simulation projects in the Shanghai live show on September.
    因此在上海站,退化建筑DevolutioN虚构了四个与“共享”相关的未来项目,它们被包裹上未来价值的外衣,并试图将上海站伪装成一次关于这四个项目的发布会。但这四个荒诞、不切实际的虚假建案背后,正在大规模城市当下滋生的商业伦理与传统、城市自然、消费主义、技术发展与就业、信息垃圾等等问题却是现实存在的。在上海站,我们邀请了多次到访过中国的瑞士艺术家Feldermelder,他将作为首位合作者,根据四个虚拟的未来城市主题创作声音,在McaM明当代美术馆和瑞士文化基金会上海办公室的推动与支持下,9月2日,他将在上海明当代美术馆,同多媒体艺术团体顽猴N.APE一起,用一个Live现场再造魔都。

  • Business value erases religious divergence. Hence, nations are replaced by gigantic corporations. City space is capitalized to generate maximum business profits. Churches, temples and synagogues are therefore compressed into individual modules, placed in the co-sharing spiritual (religious) tower which is a collection of religious modules. Traditional religions are placed on the 2nd to 18th floor, amidst sits sermonizers, nuns and Bhikkhu, with novel commercial and technological religions generated continuously. Believers linger from one religion to another, worshiping the God after work or on days off, ascending to various floors by a shared ladder. The tower top and its corresponding light represents newly bred religions. Co-sharing Spiritual (Religious) Tower functions as a religious market incorporating all religions within a metropolis based on skyscrapers.
    商业价值抹平信仰分歧,公司取代国家。城市空间用于产生最大化的商业利益。教堂、庙宇、礼拜堂因此被压缩成模块,置入一座共享精神塔。它是一座信仰的模块集成,容纳一个个信仰立方体。传统宗教在它的2-18层,布道者、修女、比丘的往来。不断有新的、商业的、技术的信仰产生并入驻。塔顶和与之对应的光属于更新的信仰。信徒之间会发生流转,他们在下班或休假时搭地铁来朝拜,共享一座天梯,到达不同楼层。依赖于摩天大楼技术,共享精神塔可以容纳一座超大型城市的所有信仰,却只需要在城市中占据很小的一块土地。它是这座高速城市的信仰超市。

  • The design, purpose and perspective on how new generations are born and raised in cities with artificial natural landscapes. Along with city expansion, comes adding difficulties for new nature explorations. Natural landscapes are repeatedly replaced by urbanization. Hence, Artificial-nature featured skyscraper emerges, functioning as urban Disney Land while providing opportunities for parent-child interaction. Typically designed as steel structure adorned with glass walls, these buildings cover large areas of plant and animal species with rich varieties providing children a place to learn to distinguish various species, gender and smell of species and form interest in nature. However, such kind of education and cultivation is controllable while being confined in undistinguishable skyscrapers. Public opinion aroused concerning the disappearance of children each year in these skyscrapers as they may have adopted an un-urban lifestyle and become tales of modern Robin Hood.
    城市中新的一代成长于被建筑的城市自然——结构、角度、目的性。城市规模不断扩张,使得一次自然的探索要横跨更长的距离。被城市覆盖的自然风貌因此在这个世代中成为消亡的经验。自然大厦孕育而生。它是城市世代的迪斯尼乐园,周末城里人亲子的契机。在钢结构和玻璃幕墙大厦的内部,覆盖着一座庞大的、具有丰富多样性的动植物景观,儿童在这里可以学习辨认物种、雌雄和气味,并且培养诗兴。但这些生长是可控的,仍是有框架的,受限于一个外形上和周遭并无差异的建筑。每年都有几个孩童在其中走丢,舆论怀疑他们选择了一种非城市的成长,现代的鲁滨逊。

  • 2,000 feet above the ground, a logistic network filled with flying machines formed out of layered traffic system, with one end attached to a receiving tower densely populated with working blocks and the other to a ball which is the core. Except for the round-the-clock assembly lines, tasks that can be finished easily by machineries are done by humans, including sorting, labeling, sealing and weighting. As the government gradually realizes it is not a disappearing industry, the dome is given a major function of relocating social resources and accommodating people’s thriving lust for consumption by providing jobs in high-tech and severely unbalanced cities. The diameter of the Dome expands 1 cm per year according to the observations of Astrophiles. Workers in disappearing industries keep flooding into the Dome until it eventually becomes the next independent planet.

  • In an epoch that massive material garbage can be sorted, degraded and erased by technology, people regarded it as nonsense to collect information by machineries, or to collect immateriality with matter. Hence Cloud garbage trucks are initially thought to be symbolic. The trucks shuffle slowly while collecting redundant information in each corner of the cities as a proof that it comes from reliable neutral institutions. However, increasing public awareness emerges that the process of transmitting memories into disposable external substance to the Cloud secretly creates an invisible world which holds incredible information sources. Meanwhile, due to over-dependence on the Cloud, cities as well as humans are degenerated into uncached instant memories. Hence, Cloud Garbage Trucks are pervasively adopted by elite office buildings and future residential quarters to avoid information leakage.
    Yet, just as the conservative Green Party at that time, they are symbolic.
    最初人们以为云垃圾车几乎是象征性的,在巨量物质垃圾被科技行为分类、降解、抹平的世代,用机械回收信息,用物质回收非物质是荒唐的。这台穿梭于城市的形式缓慢的云垃圾车,途径并逗留在每一个城市街区,宣扬自己来自一个一个可信赖的中立机构,上门回收并粉碎臃肿的信息世界的脂肪。后来逐渐有人意识到,当记忆从人自身转移到可销毁的外部物质,再从外部物质转移到云端,一个掌握着各类型记忆、秘密的不可见世界被建立了,关于它的野心和虚妄也崭露出来。与此同时,城市和人一样,因为过分依赖云,进化(或退化)成了没有缓存的快速记忆。因此云垃圾车开始被广泛接纳和使用,每一栋恐惧被窃取信息的挤满了商业精英的办公楼、每一个迫不及待忘掉今天迎接未来的住宅区都期待它途径和逗留。
    但它确实只是象征性的,来自一个像当年的绿党一样的保守组织。
