  • THE ROAD is a temporary store run by DevolutioN, located in 1F, Buliding A Tai Chuan Industrial and Trade Mansion, West Lianqian Rd. Siming district, Xiamen.
    这是DevolutioN 退化建筑的一家临时店铺，位于厦门市思明区莲前西路太川工贸大厦A栋一楼 。
  • Taichuan Industrial and Trade Mansion building completed construction in 1994 originally as an independent industrial factory building since there were no large-scale living area around. Since late 1990s, demand for housing in downtown Xiamen has been growing rapidly. In early 1997, the Jinjiting neighborhood near this building appeared and brought community vitality- quickly gathered population for this area with its more than 2,000 households. In 2008, Xiamen BRT (Bus Rapid Transit system) was put into use, serving as a drop-off point for Jinjiting station, when Taichuan Industrial and Trade Mansion began to show its commercial value. In 2014, due to the external migration of abundant local factories, government released policies towards vacant industrial buildings- allowed old buildings to change its function temporarily (into office, commercial business, hotel, etc.). Obviously Taichuan Industrial and Trade Mansion benefited from the policies and rent out its space to different operators. Thus, the original independent factory individuals become an important part of the whole living quarters.
    这栋大厦竣工于1994年，原先的性质是工业厂房，当时大厦周遭还未形成大规模生活区，大厦被作为一个独立的厂房个体使用。上世纪九十年代末，厦门市区住宅需求快速增长，1997年初，大厦附近的金鸡亭小区建成，这个拥有2000多户住户的小区迅速为这个区域聚集起人口活力。2008年，厦门BRT（快速公交系统）投入使用，作为金鸡亭站的上下客站点，太川工贸大厦那时开始显现出它的商业价值。到了2014年，因为本岛大量工厂外迁，政府针对岛内的大量空置厂房出台政策，旧厂房被允许临时变更使用功能（可做办公、商业、酒店等），太川工贸大厦受惠于此，将大楼空间出租给不同经营者，也因此由原先的独立厂房个体成为了整个生活区中的一个重要组成部分。

  • Taichuan Industrial and Trade Mansion covers shopping, entertainment, small catering and other business factors for gathering population, which has the embryonic form of the early urban complex on a certain level. However, it is not as well planned and designed as the approaching ShoppingMall. When we started this project, there have been several rounds of business changes here already. A lot of space and functions are generated according to the needs of commercial activity changes. Therefore, some functional hyperplasia areas have gradually formed.
    因为附近生活区逐渐成熟、BRT交通出口位置优势、沿街商业发展等诸多人流激励因素，太川工贸大厦涵盖了购物、娱乐、小餐饮等业态，某种层度上已有了早期城市综合体的雏形。但它又不像后来的ShoppingMall有着完善的规划与设计。在我们开始这个项目时这里已经经历了几轮业态更迭，很多空间及功能是依据业态需求变化而产生的，所以慢慢形成了一些功能增生的区域。
  • DevolutioN's temporary store is exactly a functional development punchline. This several square meters shops are separated by the security post (as well as parking cashier), which was a plastic snack shop, rent 3000 yuan monthly, as the connection between the region and the external road, where welcomed stream of people but also with a too-close parking lot gate. The owner built a temporary sidewalk to separate passengers and cars simply and easily with plastic water horse lied in front of the shop.
    DevolutioN 退化建筑 的这个临时店铺正是这样一个功能增生结点。这个几平米的小店铺由保安岗（同时也是停车收费厅）分隔出来，它的前身是一家卤料小吃店，月租3000元，作为大厦区域与外部道路的连接，这里人流可观，但因与停车场闸口距离太近，业主又在店铺前方用塑料水马隔出一条临时人行道路用作简易的人车分流。
  • After we took over the shop, we made a simple demolition and transformed it into a public sidewalk road with private property. The traces left by the superposition of various advertising signs on the shop's external walls are still exposed and we can also see the commercial character of making the best use of everything everywhere. The store, so-called THE ROAD, is still a bit of a joke. It's not so much about making the sidewalk safer but running a funny business operation presenting the symbiotic relationship between business and irrationality.
    我们接手这个店铺后做了简易的拆除，将其改造成私人领地属性的公共人行道路。店铺外墙仍能看到各种广告招牌叠加遗留的痕迹，我们也看到了无处不在的物尽其用的商业性格。这家叫“路”的店仍旧是一个小玩笑，与其说它要解决行人道路安全问题，不如说它经营的是商业与不合理性共生的一个有趣局面。
